One person died and seven were injured in a New Year’s Eve multi-vehicle accident on Interstate 94 in Dunn County.
The crash occurred at about 6 p.m. Friday at I-94 and state Highway 12 near Elk Mound. Traffic was re-routed for about three and a half hours.
Bob J. Jackson, 30, of Eleva, was killed in the chain-reaction crash involving one semi truck and eight vehicles.
Jackson was outside of his car when he was struck by a semi whose driver was attempting to avoid other crashed vehicles in the roadway, according to the Wisconsin State Patrol.
Jackson’s vehicle was parked on the median shoulder and was undamaged.
The driver of the semi, Mustafa Hashi Egal, 28 of Minneapolis, sustained minor injuries. He was taken by ambulance to Luther Hospital in Eau Claire where he was treated and released.
Others who were injured were transported by ambulance to Red Cedar Medical Center in Menomonie or Luther.
The drivers of the other vehicles involved in the accident are: Bradford Hosak, 32, of Minnetonka, Minn.; Samantha Sullivan, 17, of Arkansaw; Charles Carmichael, 60, of Woodstock, Ill.; Jeremy Pire, 33, of Farmington, Minn.; Timothy Holtz, 21, of Wauwatosa; and Patrick McMahon, 23, of Eau Claire.
Those injured (in addition to the semi driver) include: Taylor Sullivan, 16, of Menomonie; Hnou Hang, 15, of Menomonie; Barbara Carmichael, 59, of Woodstock, Ill.; Jody Pire, 34, and Charlie Pire, 6, of Farmington, Minn.; James Conway, 22, of Wauwatosa.
The injuries were all categorized by the State Patrol as non-life threatening.
Roads were ice covered and slippery at a time where several other accidents in the area were also taking place. No travel was advised in Eau Claire Friday night due to the icy conditions.
