VANDERBURGH COUNTY — The driver of a pickup truck and his passenger injured in a crash with a tractor-trailer Wednesday morning at the intersection of Boonville-New Harmony Road and U.S. 41 North. Both remained in critical condition Wednesday night at Deaconess Hospital.
The Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Office identified them as Raymond Phillips, 70, of Waterloo, Ill., driver of the pickup, and Timothy Phillips, 39, also of Waterloo.
Rescue crews had to extricate the driver, Raymond Phillips, from the truck.
Emergency dispatchers were notified of the wreck at 10:10 a.m. Wednesday. Southbound U.S. 41 was closed to traffic for about 90 minutes.
The semi driver, Bennie Rex Nelson, 67, of Evansville, was not injured, but he was taken to a hospital for a blood test. The Sheriff's Office said such testing is standard procedure in accidents involving serious injury, and as of Wednesday night, alcohol or drugs were not believed to have been involved in the wreck.
The Sheriff's Office reported a witness said the pickup truck, traveling east on Boonville-New Harmony Road, was stopped at the traffic light when it entered the intersection against a red light and was hit by the southbound semi. It remains unknown why the pickup truck drove into the intersection.
First responders to the scene found the pickup on the opposite side of U.S. 41, against a chain fence in front of a CVS drugstore. They had to break apart the top of the pickup to remove its occupants.
