It was a tragic year, as far as the number of serious accidents in York County — with eight people losing their lives on Interstate 80 in this area.
In April, Tabitha Vanpelt, 37, of Lincoln, was killed in a one-vehicle three miles east of York. Three minor children in Vanpelt’s vehicle were injured.
For much of the year, it appeared that York County would see a decrease in fatality accidents for 2010 — until Thanksgiving.
On Nov. 20, two women and their young children were killed near the Henderson interchange. The driver, Socorro Sepulveda, 22, of Holdrege, lost control of the vehicle which then crossed the median into an oncoming semi. Sepulveda and her infant son, Dominic Perez, along with Martha Machado-Delgado, 31, of Hastings and her two-year-old daughter, Zoe Hernandez, were pronounced dead.
On Friday, Nov. 26, a 20-year-old Aurora man was killed at the York interchange. Investigators say Jordan Schaffer was attempting to merge into interstate traffic when he lost control of his vehicle, which also crossed the median and into an oncoming truck. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Then, on Dec. 15, a deadly accident occurred near the Waco interchange, after a semi jackknifed due to icy road conditions. A car carrying two Lincoln men went under the semi, with the passenger, Bradley Cusatis Sr., 44, being pronounced dead at the scene. The car’s driver, Brandon Taylor, 25, of Lincoln, died four days later.
In less than a month, seven people died in York County, due to fatality accidents.
